A jigsaw puzzle constructed my nieces and I on the floor. Open like unfamiliar terrain the box lied and unhinged. Small, quick hands reached unshapely for a part of Mickey’s ear, but failed to recognize that it was one of the large pieces of cardboard or that it was a corner square meaning it had two straight edges. Without any advice she wanted to do it all by herself or logic, and her sister just sat and watched— pacified by chewing on her contentifier as we aligned a struggle of the fractured laminated picture. -Samantha Derleth
